This might be one of my favorite things I’ve ever crocheted! I made Crochet by Genna’s Fidget Fish with Premier Parfait Chunky yarn, rainbow scales, and crinkle paper and rattles tucked inside, and I’m completely obsessed with how it turned out.
Choosing the colors
I’d been waiting for a project to highlight Parfait Chunky’s gorgeous new Periwinkle color. This fish was the perfect excuse, and a fun way to indulge my love of rainbows. 🌈
I grouped related shades into columns, with lighter colors above and darker ones below:
| Part of the fish | Colors, from top to bottom |
|---|---|
| Body and tail | Periwinkle |
| Blue scales | Reef, Blue, Classic Blue |
| Green scales | Robin’s Egg, Seaweed Salad, Emerald |
| Yellow scales | Cream, Sunshine, Summer Squash |
| Pink scales | Bubblegum, Hibiscus |
Cream isn’t a true yellow, but I love the soft touch it adds to this palette.
Making it crinkle and rattle
The no-sew construction was fun to make, with the scales crocheted directly onto the unstuffed body. The body used nearly a full skein of Periwinkle, while the scales are a nice stash-busting opportunity to use leftover yarn.
I added crinkle paper and rattles to the scales to make it interactive. I already had the sensory inserts for my (totally awesome but never-ending WIP! 🙈) Polar Quiet Book by ZenKnit, another project Genna inspired me to try. You’ll see a peek at its crinkly whale page in the video, too.
I’m curious to try smaller yarns and more rainbow palettes next. Which colors would you choose? 🌈
