I love whales, I love the ocean, and I had so much fun exploring the color combinations for this blanket! Whale of a Tail is a modular corner-to-corner crochet pattern that you build one square at a time. Make a blanket full of whales, or mix whale squares with coordinating solid-color squares. 🐋 🌈
The digital PDF pattern includes:
🐳 A full-color whale chart and written color instructions for all 41 diagonals
🎨 12 blanket layouts, with yarn shade names and color swatches
🧶 Materials, size and yarn planning, and joining instructions
💻 Access to the optional online Whale Square Companion to follow each diagonal and save your place
One Whale, Lots of Possibilities

The featured Blue Whales layout keeps things simple with alternating blues, but choosing the other layouts was part of the fun. There are ocean-inspired blues and greens, pinks, white whales, and colorful rainbow options.
Follow one of the twelve included layouts, swap the colors, or use them as inspiration for your own arrangement. The layouts range from 9 to 25 squares, and each square measures approximately 14 inches with the recommended yarn and hook.
Following the Pattern
The pattern is written for advanced beginners, with no previous C2C experience required. Use the full-color chart, written diagonal instructions, or optional online Companion to follow the whale design.

Everything you need to complete the blanket is included in the PDF. If you’d like to see the techniques in action, these two free tutorials cover the methods used:
- Chain-2 C2C Crochet — increasing, decreasing, and changing colors.
- Joining C2C Squares — joining squares directly with a crochet hook, without a separate border around each square.
