Which Crochet Decrease Is Best?

Four crochet spheres side by side comparing decrease methods: yarn over regular decrease, yarn over invisible decrease, yarn under regular decrease, and yarn under invisible decrease.

Ever wondered which decrease method actually looks best for amigurumi? Inspired by beloved amigurumi designer Pica Pau — who uses regular decreases instead of the more commonly recommended invisible decrease — I set out to test all the options. I crocheted the exact same sphere four times, keeping everything identical except the decrease method, to see how each one really comes out. The four methods I tested are:

  1. Yarn over + regular decrease
  2. Yarn over + invisible decrease
  3. Yarn under + regular decrease
  4. Yarn under + invisible decrease

At the end I compare all four side by side and share my conclusions on which I think looks best and which I plan to use going forward!
