Lessons from Pica Pau

I’ve been working my way through the Hobbii Amigurumi Advent Calendar for 2025 by Pica Pau and after finishing the Week 1 project, Owen Stoat, I took a detour for a Pica Pau deep dive. I came across a tutorial series on Pica Pau’s YouTube channel — and I wanted to share some of what I learned here. The videos are in Spanish — which was actually a fun excuse for me to brush up on the language, and I also watched with English subtitles.

Beyond specific amigurumi techniques (some of which are a bit non-standard compared to what many of us are used to), the videos offered a refreshing perspective on crochet as a creative practice. They reinforced the idea that there isn’t one “right way” to crochet — just different options.

One idea that really stuck with me comes from a quote from Pica Pau’s blog that beautifully captures her philosophy around imperfections and handmade work:

“I’m also not worried about ‘perfection’: things like the little gap that forms when changing colors, or the fact that one leg is 2 millimeters longer than the other don’t bother me. Maybe it’s an excuse my head worked on years ago to allow me to continue crocheting without getting stuck there, but what happens to me with those details is that instead of seeing them as mistakes to be fixed, for me they’re signs of hand-crocheted, characteristics of crochet, something like appreciating the joints of a piece of wooden furniture, or the fingerprints on a piece of pottery.”

Next up I’ll be working on the Week 2 Advent Calendar project, Aurora Deer, and maybe I’ll try incorporating some of these ideas as I go — stay tuned for more! ✨
