Meet Sandy the Watermelon Whale, made from random unlabeled yarn I had!
I’ve been itching to try a non-Woobles pattern, and I ordered some yarn, but it wasn’t going to come for awhile. I was excited about trying a watermelon whale pattern I had found when I started getting interested in crochet, and I happened to have some pink and dark green yarn from when I used to knit so I figured I would give it a shot!
The yarn of course didn’t have its labels anymore, so I didn’t know what material or weight it was, so I took my best guess and used a 3.25mm crochet hook. It was also my first time not using a Woobles crochet hook. I bought a set of clover amour hooks and I am in love! The yarn ended up being challenging, but the crochet hook was so smooth and nice to hold and crochet with!
I wasn’t sure how different it would feel from Woobles easy peasy yarn, and it was a challenge, especially at first. The yarn would split some and it was a little harder to see my v’s. But I was also pleasantly surprised, especially as I got the hang of it, that it really is the same, and it’s possible for me, even with random yarn not well suited to amigurumi.
A bonus was that the whale came out without holes like my Woobles projects. I think maybe some combination of using a smaller crochet hook and the fact that the yarn has a little bit of fuzziness to it, but it filled in really nicely.
The pattern was interesting — very top heavy for a whale — and then the fins and tail were made by crocheting into a chain. Another new challenge for me! And in the same round as the color change + crocheting in the front loops only so extra fun. π They came out kind of twerpy looking. Oh well!
My husband said it looked like a radish before I added the watermelon seeds. π€£ Then adding the seeds helped a little I guess.
I also decided on the importance of naming my projects. The Woobles kits come with names, but I named this one myself. Watermelon in Spanish is “sandia” + “sand”? — Sandy seemed like the perfect name for a watermelon whale. π
All in all a great experiment and so fun to be expanding my skills and using different yarn. π³ππ§Άπ©·π
