Fred the (Pink!) Dino

Meet Fred the (Pink!) Dino, my fourth project, made from a Woobles learn-to-crochet kit!

To be honest, this one was not my favorite, compared to some of my previous projects. I got the pink version of the dinosaur, and maybe this shade of pink is just not my favorite, and I also struggled a bit with a few different parts or just felt they came out a little bit wonky.

This was my first time I think doing a pattern that wasn’t totally symmetrical. To get the dino shape you increase, then decrease, then increase again, then decrease again, and the rounds are not all the same exact small sequence of stitches a bunch of times (like repeating 2 single crochets and 1 increase 6 times), so that was just a little bit different.

This was also my first time doing a slip stitch join and doing a small chain and then crocheting into it to make the teeny tiny arms so that was an interesting challenge.

I also decided to embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes. (Safety eyes are actually totally not safe for babies and small children and pets since they can be choking hazards!!) The Woobles kits all give you both options: to do safety eyes (they give you 3 eyes in each kit which is nice in case you lose one!) or to embroider with black yarn. In the end I think I have a slight preference for the look of the safety eyes since they’re perfectly round and a little bit shiny (plus they’re a little bit less work) but I think the embroidered eyes look fine and it’s good to have tried both.

I found adding the spikes to be a little tough. I made all 5 exactly the same way but I think they came out looking slightly different from each other, and sewing them on was hard — in some cases they didn’t end up looking so much like triangular spikes and maybe the spacing was a bit off. But maybe I’m being too critical. 😅

He still came out pretty cute overall I think when I take a step back, and I’m learning a ton and loving crocheting! 🧶 🦖 🩷
